Abstract
Maternal health disparities in Nigeria are pronounced, with higher maternal mortality rates (42 per 1,000 live births) and poor outcomes driven by education, healthcare access, and cultural factors like polygamy. Hence, the objective of this paper was to evaluate the effect of High-Risk Factors for Maternal Mortality at Specialist Hospital, Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria using appropriate standard procedures with Application of Multi-Criteria Decision Modeling (MCDM) Using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Data obtained reveals that Infant mortality is high, with under-five mortality at 120 per 1,000 and neonatal mortality at 2 per 1,000 live births. Healthcare system challenges include limited emergency obstetric care (less than 20%) and skilled birth attendance (35%). Major causes include pregnancy complications and inadequate care. Studies from Ethiopia show that while 62.3% of women intend to use health facilities, barriers like distance and obstetric risks reduce utilization. Preterm births in Uganda are higher than national averages (35.8%), linked to factors like employment and preeclampsia. Interventions such as mobile health and improved rural transport have shown promise. Researchers advocate tools like Analytic Hierarchy Process to enhance decision-making and address maternal mortality disparities in low-resource settings, emphasizing cultural and systemic improvements.
