Abstract
The global demand for plant materials for the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products, etc. continues to increase. Plants harvested from natural populations remain the most important source of medicine. Yet traditional lifestyles which have sustained livelihoods in poorer areas of the world are not coping with demographics, globalization and changing socio-economic ambitions. The sustainable utilization of indigenous plant resources is a guarantee for long-term livelihoods. However, to ensure that enterprises meet market requirements and achieve environmental sustainability, it is necessary that natural resource management, methods of collection, handling and domestication meet internationally accepted and accredited standards. This chapter deals with the entry requirements for international markets for indigenous plant materials and extracts focusing mostly on aromatic and medicinal plants.
