Abstract
A well-developed moundfield in a treeless grassland was studied, where a shallow soil overlies volcanic rock. Three mounds were excavated by digging a trench right across the middle. Each mound was found to contain a living nest of a fungus-growing termite Odontotermes montanus Harris. One mound also contained a secondary nest of O. anceps, and all of the mounds contained some aestivating soil animals.
