Abstract
Ornamental and medicinal plants (herbs) play very essential roles in the daily life of humans all around the world. While ornamentals offer aesthetic satisfaction to different people in diverse cultural contexts; herbs, however, provide healing benefits through their detoxicating and anti-inflammatory properties. Production of these two groups of plants can be severely impacted by various biotic stressors such as insects and disease pathogens. A great array of plant pathogens are known to reduce the yield potential of different ornamentals and herbs, among which are the plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs). PPNs are known, worldwide, as very devastating soil-inhabiting pathogens and have been known to damage potted ornamentals and herbs in greenhouses. The use of biocontrol agents (BCAs), specifically endophyticfungi and antagonistic bacteria, in managing various plant pathogens, especially PPNs, has been extensively studied and well documented. Although, there is scientific literature that has revealed the application of BCAs to significantly manage some insects and fungal pathogens on specific ornamentals and herbs, very little is available on PPNs. Hence, this chapter briefly reiterates the economic importance of PPNs and their various host ornamental and medicinal plants, the significance of BCAs as well as highlights a few cases of the use of BCAs in the management of PPNs on specific ornamental or medicinal plants.
