Abstract
Land use and land cover changes (LULCC) are crucial for understanding environmental dynamics, informing policy, and guiding sustainable development. This chapter comprehensively examines geospatial techniques used in mapping and monitoring LULCC. It explores various tools, including remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and advanced computational models, highlighting their applications and comparative advantages. These technologies have revolutionized our ability to capture, analyze, and visualize LULCC over time, offering insights into environmental change patterns and drivers. Despite advancements, challenges such as data accuracy, resolution, and the need for real-time monitoring still need to be addressed. Strategies to mitigate these challenges and ensure more reliable LULCC assessments are discussed. Recent advancements in machine learning, cloud computing, and high-resolution imaging are pushing the boundaries of LULCC monitoring. The chapter concluded by discussing future directions, emphasizing the potential of integrating emerging technologies for more comprehensive and dynamic environmental monitoring. This vision envisions geospatial technologies providing robust tools for ecological stewardship and sustainable management.
